Fourth edition
4 may - 28 july 2024After the house, the table, the thoughts, the papers and the projects accumulated during the pandemic, we returned to the journey again, to put one step after another because without the meeting life seems suspended, postponed, and all this has changed.
What has been imagined, the trajectories and sequences on the maps, from small-scale worlds now return to the dimension of everyday tools, portraits of the visible, putting us in relation with what is other than us.
For these reasons we thought that the right theme to restart the Biennale Disegno was a Return to travel. What the artists have produced in this epochal time, but also what, in past centuries, they have expressed before, during and after their travelling, their training, their need to know, becomes the main object of the fourth international exhibition of the drawing.
In the recent past, we understood that going out with the dog, even going to the newsstand, could be considered a journey, but the news has awakened us from our torpor by reminding us of the issue of exodus, that some are still forcibly displaced from their homes. Between these two opposites extends a range of declinations that touches on the fields of discovery and classification, touches on project and memory, geography and history, the vertical and the horizon.
The thousand drawings come from the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid and the Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain de Picardie, ranging from the travel notebooks of Felice Giani to those of Mattotti; from Piranesi’s engravings to Thayaht’s projects; but also from important private collections such as the Studiolo Rivi with masters of the fifties and sixties such as Morandi, Fontana and Fautrier; from the Carteles of Cuban cinema to the drawings of The Rose of Bagdad at the Cantiere Contemporaneo.
Thus, in the main places of the city of Rimini, a vast journey through images unfolds, a true journey within a journey. A path of study and pleasure that highlights the entire welcoming vocation of the city of Rimini, which from a seaside destination has always sought within itself the sense of a transformation, of a journey into the imagination.
